Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
